Following our participation at the ARPA Conference, Quantum Recreation is proud to share our new Campground Safety Handouts — a practical, field-tested toolkit designed to help parks and recreation teams strengthen their safety inspection programs. 

Our handouts provide clear, step-by-step guidance for campground operators to conduct thorough inspections across multiple safety areas, including trees and vegetation, electrical and water systems, site equipment, and drainage. The materials also include a Hazard Prioritization Matrix to help staff quickly identify which issues require immediate action and which can be scheduled for later remediation. 

Each checklist emphasizes documentation and training. From photo documentation best practices (the 5-photo sequence for every hazard) to the HIDDEN framework for staff training, every section is built to promote consistency, accountability, and continuous improvement. 

Seasonal inspection calendars and weather-triggered inspection guidelines ensure that your team stays proactive year-round — addressing hazards before they become incidents.

Here are some essential tips for a safe and enjoyable playground visit during those scorching days:

1. Stay Hydrated

Bring plenty of water and encourage your kids to sip regularly, even if they don’t feel thirsty. Hydration is key to preventing heat exhaustion.

2. Apply Sunscreen

Protect your child’s skin with a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) and reapply every two hours—or more often if they’re sweating or playing in water.

3. Seek Shade

Choose playgrounds with shaded play structures, trees, or pavilions. Shade helps keep your child cooler and reduces sun exposure.

4. Avoid Peak Heat Hours

Plan your playground time for early morning or late afternoon when the sun’s rays are less intense. Midday heat can be dangerous for both kids and adults.

5. Check Playground Equipment

Metal slides, swings, and other surfaces can become dangerously hot in the sun. Always test the temperature with your hand before your child uses them.

Your child’s safety and comfort come first. By taking these steps, you can ensure a fun, cool, and worry-free day at the playground—even on the hottest summer afternoons.
